Kira Ann Courson, 21, of Warsaw, has not yet been sentenced for two felony drug charges, but she was arrested again Sunday, this time charged with felony trafficking with an inmate.

Courson is accused of sneaking a cell phone to an inmate of the Kosciusko County Jail.

According to paperwork provided by the Kosciusko County Prosecutor’s Office, Kosciusko County jailers were performing security checks on Sept. 8 and located a cell phone in the possession of inmate Ryan Schultz. Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department Detective Josh Spangle downloaded the contents of the phone, which included 130 text messages and 57 photos from and to Courson that began on Sept. 2.

When interviewed by police, Schultz said Courson brought the phone to the jail and left it in a trash can in the jail lobby. Another inmate, serving as a trustee, was told to retrieve the phone when he emptied the trash on the third shift. Schultz said Courson claimed she also brought contraband into the jail on “several occasions” for her boyfriend.

Courson’s criminal record in Kosciusko County dates to 2006 and includes convictions for criminal mischief, battery, aggravated battery and criminal recklessness causing serious bodily injury, drug dealing, operating while under the influence of a Schedule I or II drug, driving while suspended, illegal possession of alcohol and driving without a license.

Courson is set to appear in Kosciusko Circuit Court on Oct. 17 for a change of plea for a Class A felony charge of dealing cocaine and a Class D felony for possession of cocaine.

Her trafficking offense is a Class C felony and has been filed in Kosciusko County Superior Court III. She was arrested and held on a $20,000 surety bond.
